Mothers who sew for daughters....
Publish On 2008-09-13 , 6:19 PM
Mothers who sew for daughters are tested in unique and crazy ways. I was one of those mothers, and one of those tests that comes to mind happened when Helen was in junior high school, and she had been selected to be a member of the school drill team. That was really great! Not so great was the need to come up with a costume in two days, including finding the right pattern, fabric, etc., getting the garment made in time, with a full time job outside the home, a husband, and two children to care for. Helen and I shopped for the pattern, the fabric, etc., and the first evening I got the skirt cut out, fitted, and basted. Bedtime beckoned, so the plan was to work on it before work the next morning, then rush home at noon to stitch and press it.
The plan worked flawlessly until, in the rush to get done before my lunch hour was done, while pressing the garment, the iron slipped from my grip and landed on the floor, before first landing on my big toe! The pain was terrible, and all I could do was hop around on one foot, while shrieking in pain.
The witnesses to this calamity were four of our five cats, all of whom sat and stared in wonder at the sight of their human “mother” leaping about the room and making shrill sounds. They looked so cute and so stunned, I had to laugh. When the pain subsided, I got back to work on the project, and it was completed in time for my daughter’s first performance with the school drill team.
That was more than thirty years ago, and we still laugh about it.
